There must be more to life
than what we’ve taken
from others, something we missed,
something they’ve hidden away—
otherwise, what would our gratitude mean
to us without something to gain from
all we’ve given these people in return,
to whom appreciation apparently
isn’t a reciprocal, as if they were the ones
with something to miss?
